Kentucky lawmakers passed Senate Bill 4 this year, “establishing and implementing policy standards” for the use of AI in state governments. While officials are taking a final touch on these standards, the U.S. Senate’s major spending bill now includes provisions that allow state AI laws to place a moratorium on states’ AI laws or withhold funds if states cross boundaries.
“At this stage, the potential impact of federal regulations that are still moving is unknown,” says Jim Burnhardt, CIO of the Commonwealth Technical Bureau. “Therefore, it is too early to try to determine the impact at this point. We certainly look closely at these events and are ready to be agile.”
Meanwhile, Kate Shanks with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce said she hopes her group will look at a federal framework for AI rather than a patchwork of state law, representing business interests.
Kentucky’s AI Task Force has returned to sessions over the summer as lawmakers hope to tackle issues surrounding data centers, energy use and education.
