Delhi’s AIIMS has started a pilot project that involves installing artificial intelligence-powered CCTV cameras to enhance security on its premises. The move comes in the wake of the rape-murder incident at a hospital in Kolkata, prompting a review of safety measures at AIIMS.
Director Dr. M. Srinivas explained to the media that AI-enabled cameras have been strategically placed at key entrances and exits such as the emergency block and mother and child block. These cameras, equipped with facial recognition technology, can help identify individuals who enter campus without authorization.
In addition to safety measures, AIIMS will expand its capacity by adding a new 200-bed critical care block. The expansion aims to reduce the strain on the current emergency ward, which often struggles to accommodate 700 to 800 patients each day.
