As the birthplace of AI (AI), as a global leader in frontier AI research, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has selected the Google Public Sector as a partner in large computing. This collaboration allows CMU world-class research to reach new levels of AI for scientific discovery and commercial applications.

Through this partnership, CMU acquired a large cloud-based GPU cluster, significantly expanding its high-performance computing capabilities and establishing it as the national leader in university’s cloud-based research computing. This cutting-edge infrastructure enables CMU researchers to tackle some of the most complex challenges in AI, driving scientific discovery, innovation and real-world impact.

“Carnegie Mellon University is thrilled to be able to expand its long record of collaboration and innovation with Google,” he said. Stan Waddell(Opens in a new window)Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. “This new phase of our collaboration will strengthen our efforts to tackle some of the most challenging challenges facing society today.”

The partnership combines with Google’s established presence in Pittsburgh, further establishing the city as a technology hub that actively attracts talent and investment in the region. Advances in AI are closely linked to the availability of computing power. Academic research usually operates on a smaller scale than large industry projects, but it is becoming increasingly important that the country’s future talent pipeline has access to systems that can run on hundreds of GPUs.

“Access to this amount of computing power fundamentally changes what a university can achieve in the field of AI and machine learning,” he said. Zico KolterHead of Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon. “This resource will enable our researchers to promote new advances in the development of safer AI systems, developing new models aimed at fundamental advancements in science, and developing large-scale assessments to truly understand the current and future capabilities of AI.”

Google Public Sector provides comprehensive support for onboarding workloads and resource optimization, enabling CMU researchers to seamlessly leverage advanced GPU infrastructure. This support allows you to tackle complex challenges and create real impacts.

Brad Hoffman, director of Google’s public sector, said: “These types of partnerships are important to encourage research and the development of critical skills to shape the future of AI. The Google public sector is dedicated to providing safe, scalable, innovative cloud solutions that allow educators and researchers to drive next-generation innovation.”

This partnership represents a key milestone in CMU’s continued commitment to driving the boundaries of AI research. By expanding access to cutting-edge computing power, Carnegie Mellon and Google’s public sector are paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries shaping the future of AI and its applications across the industry. As AI continues to evolve, this collaboration will allow CMUs to remain at the forefront of innovation and promote progress that brings global social outcomes.
