According to Openai CEO Sam Altman, ChatGpt’s image generation feature is now available to free users. The decision came days after an unprecedented response to the new feature, generating AI images, particularly art inspired by the iconic studio Ghibli.
Until now, AI image generation capabilities have only been available to paid subscribers with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team Plans. Free users were limited to generating up to three images per day. Following the popularity of features among premium users, Openai extended it to all free tier accounts.
Sam Altman wrote to X, “ChatGpt Image Gen was deployed to all free users.”

Before the announcement, he said, “I want everyone to use it.” “If your service has over 700 million active users per month, you don’t do anything stupid like saying you can’t use our open model. We want everyone to use it,” he wrote to X.

The deployment began on March 26th, and as of April 1st, all ChatGPT users have access to the tool regardless of their subscription. This feature is equipped with OpenAI’s GPT-4O model.
Altman said the rollout of image generation to free layer users has caused an explosive surge in new accounts. He said, “The launch of ChatGpt 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments I’ve ever seen, adding 1 million users in five days. Adding 1 million users in the last hour.”

We have added 1 million users in the past hour.

Previously, Altman appealed to users in response to pressure on Openai’s infrastructure, saying, “Let it cool by generating images. This is insane and the team needs sleep.”
To manage the situation, Openai has introduced temporary fee restrictions for image generation. Altman explained the issue in another post, saying the number of requests was “melt” and put a heavy strain on the company’s GPU (graphic processing unit).
