Artificial intelligence is rapidly developing and as businesses adopt generative AI security measures, they face new challenges: protecting sensitive data from unintended exposure and misuse.
Organizations struggle to control sensitive data as AI-powered platforms such as Microsoft Corp.’s Copilot and Salesforce Inc.’s AgentForce. The challenge is not only managing permissions, but also understanding how data is used, who accessed it, and that unintended risks can arise.
Varonis’ Brian Vecci talks about Generating AI for TheCube and The Tech Innovation Cubed Awards 2025 Interview Series.
“We’ve always adopted a data-centric approach using security, especially generative AI tools,” he said. “We continue to innovate to ensure our customers benefit from these new tools and technologies without introducing new risks.”
Vecci spoke with Christophe Bertrand of TheCube during an exclusive broadcast on TheCube and TheCube’s Christophe Bertrand, which aired exclusively on TheCube, Siliconangle Media’s LiveStreaming Studio. They discussed the security and compliance risks of generated AI in an enterprise environment and how Varonis can help mitigate data exposure.
How Generated AI Security Protects Delicate Enterprise Data
One of the biggest risks associated with generating AI is the ability to represent hidden data that has surfaced or forgotten within the company. Vecci shared an impressive example of the major Wall Street Bank piloting Microsoft Copilot.
“They gave people on the trading floor to 365 copilot people. One of the first prompts one of these users put into Copilot was a relatively benign question: “What stocks are employees investing in?” “What they were expecting was that they would get a summary. Instead, what this user got was a huge table of thousands of rows of employee names in their 401(k) account, Social Security Number, Account Number, and Positions. That’s because someone from the compensation team created a spreadsheet, saved it on the team site and inadvertently shared it with everyone in the company.”
According to VECCI, Varonis leverages AI-driven surveillance and automation to help safely deploy generative AI tools while minimizing data exposure risk. Recognizing its contribution to Enterprise Security, Varonis was awarded TheCube’s TOP Data Protection Innovation Award. By leveraging generation AI security tools such as Varonis, businesses can proactively monitor, detect and respond to data threats in real time.
“What makes Varonis unique is that we were able to innovate like this is that we don’t just know what the data is,” Vecci said. “We know what data WHO is using. When we build automation and our customers apply that automation, they do it safely. We minimize the time it takes to detect threats and how long it takes to respond to it. With SaaS, part of the way our organization deploys Valonis, we are seeing the issue before you do so. So, if you use a managed data detection response, please call us.”
