Media experts have come together as part of an effort to harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the broadcast industry.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Women Radio 91.7FM, Toun Sonaiya, disclosed this at the AI Radio Summit held in Lagos and monitored virtually by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
The summit, titled “Smart Radio: Harnessing AI for the next generation of broadcasting,” also had a sub-theme: “The intersection of AI and the future of radio broadcasting in Nigeria.”
The event, hosted by Women’s Radio in collaboration with the Center for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), also featured the unveiling of an AI-generated radio host called NIMI.
During her talk, Sonaiya said that the program will help experts explore how AI can enhance audience engagement, streamline audio content production, and increase operational efficiency through smart editing and data analysis. He said the program aims to pave the way for the future of radio broadcasting.
“For me, when I look back at the remarkable development of Women Radio 91.7FM, I am reminded of my own journey growing up without a cell phone or the internet.
“And I’m excited about the possibilities that AI brings. At Women Radio 91.7FM, my team and I have intentionally embraced this new era, not only welcoming new innovations, but leading them.
“We leverage AI for presentations, narration, news editing, content creation, and automation.
“We are reviving radio to connect with our audience.
“As pioneers in AI radio broadcasting, our mission is to inspire others to acquire AI skills.
“AI radio is the future, and today’s future is now,” she said.
Mr. Sonaiya urged media professionals to harness AI for sustainable innovation and growth and carve out the future of radio broadcasting.
Adeji Adekunle, Program Director, Nigeria Media Innovation Program, who spoke virtually, said AI will not only impact the experience of staff within organizations, but will also provide opportunities to enrich businesses as media entrepreneurs. Ta.
“If you’re a radio or broadcast professional here or a business owner, you have to think about what AI can do for you,” he said.
Mr. Adekunle urged media professionals to consider the various uses of AI and how it impacts the viewer experience.
But he called for an internal organizational AI policy to guide how practitioners work, citing privacy concerns.
“Let’s put together policies that strengthen our work and protect the integrity of our work,” he added.
Stellamaris Okebu, Business Program Manager for Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, enumerated the benefits of AI.
She said AI will help analyze personal data and learn who listeners are, their age groups and how to best serve them.

“This will really help the next generation do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently,” she said.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Lagos State Governor, Gboyega Akosile, said the AI Radio Summit was an important milestone in the industry.

Akosile said the summit will delve into the important debate surrounding AI ethics and the opportunities it presents to ensure a more inclusive and innovative radio industry that prioritizes the needs and voices of all community members. He said he believed it would be.
He said Lagos State is investing heavily in smart city projects aimed at transforming the entire technology ecosystem from what it is now to what everyone wants.
Praising Women Radio, the governor said the state is ready to partner with the radio station for a better future and development of the ecosystem.
