We announce a new poll from the AI Policy Institute (see summary and full survey results) SB1047 (Scott Assessing whether the largest new AI models create a risk of catastrophic harm) There has been widespread and overwhelming support for Sen. Wiener’s bill. It is currently moving through the California State Capitol. According to the poll, 59% of California voters support SB1047, while only 20% oppose it, and notably, 64% of respondents who work in the technology industry support SB1047. Only 17% of respondents support the policy, while only 17% oppose it.
Senator Wiener recently sent an open letter to Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator dispelling the misinformation being spread about SB1047. Among other things, SB1047 would send model developers to prison for failing to predict abuses and stifle innovation. “This bill protects and encourages innovation by reducing the risk of serious harm to society that threatens public trust in emerging technologies,” the letter said. “This poll is another example of what we have known for a long time: A majority of the public believes that safe AI We support common-sense regulation to ensure strong accountability for development and the companies and billionaires developing this technology. We support weakening public support and eliminating regulation of AI technology. It is well known that there is a massive disinformation effort underway to thwart this important bill, led by individuals and companies with strong financial interests in But today’s data shows just how little impact their efforts to discredit a highly popular policy have had on voters and policymakers, including tech workers. We reaffirmed how we are united in supporting SB1047 and fighting to ensure the development of AI technologies that benefit humanity. ”
