Prime Minister sets out AI action plan at UCL

In a grand speech at UCL East Campus today, Chancellor Keir Starmer announced new plans for artificial intelligence (AI) to boost growth, living standards and revolutionize public services.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, who is pioneering the use of AI in areas from medical imaging to eye health and tackling fundamental questions in AI applications. I met with UCL researchers.

Sir Keir and Mr Kyle were then given a tour of the Manufacturing Future Institute, a world-class research institute focused on creating the next generation of manufacturing technology, located in the Marshgate building.

The event was also attended by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and was joined by Sir Keir and Kyle, as well as UCL President and Chancellor, Dr Michael Spence, and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geraint Rees (Research, Innovation and Research), who joined UCL East at the event. In his speech, the Prime Minister said the government would implement all 50 recommendations set out in the AI ​​Opportunities Action Plan, written by technical adviser and head of the Agency for Advanced Research and Inventions, Matt Clifford.

Dr Spence said: “I am delighted to welcome the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State and the Mayor of London to our new campus, UCL East, to launch the Government’s AI Action Plan.

“AI has huge potential for society, and researchers at UCL have long been working to develop it to benefit people and the planet, including reducing carbon emissions, enhancing brain imaging and improving the way we diagnose disease. We have utilized AI.

“We are part of an ecosystem that connects students and global experts with industry, all supported by government, philanthropic and philanthropic funding, making us a global leader in AI research and innovation. I am a leader.”
