The Chip Security Act aims to prevent advanced US AI chips from reaching enemies like China. The law was introduced in response to evidence of US chips that will strengthen China’s military and surveillance, requiring location verification of AI chip shipments.
Washington, DC (USA), July 17 (ANI): Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have introduced the Chip Security Act, a bipartisan effort to block advanced American artificial intelligence (AI) chips from entering the hands of enemies like the Communist Party of China (CCP).
The bill was introduced by China’s Speaker John Mourenar (R-MI), ranking member Raja Krishnamoll (D-IL), and six other lawmakers, and responded directly to the adoption of evidence, including the committee’s deep seek report, revealing that US origin chips have been leaked to China through shell companies. The chips are said to empower Beijing’s AI-driven military and surveillance infrastructure, the SCCCP said.
“For too long, the Chinese Communist Party has been using the hole in export control to secretly acquire US technology used to promote military attacks and domestic crackdown,” said Mullanar. “This bill will help close these loopholes and protect both our national security and technological advantage,” he added, according to the SCCCP.
Among its central provisions, the Chip Security Act is as follows:
1. It requires verification of the location of AI chip shipments to prevent illegal diversion into China and other hostile regimes.
2. Enforces reporting requirements for chip manufacturers to detect suspicious transactions or attempts to repurpose.
3. Instruct the Department of Commerce to research and implement stronger protections against technology theft.
Protecting US innovation
According to the SCCCP, the law addresses bipartisan concerns that American innovation is being weaponized by the CCP. The US-made chip is reportedly used to develop monitoring conditions powered by Chinese AI. This is the tool that Beijing uses to monitor its population and to curb objections from Xinjiang to Hong Kong.
The SCCCP was introduced in the Senate by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR).
Countering the authoritarian use of AI
The SCCCP emphasized the meaning of the bill. It deploys Chinese AI systems with stolen US chips, protects well-paid jobs in the US technology sector, and protects American service members from future conflicts that could prevent American technology from promoting authoritarian oppression.
“The CCP’s abuse of US innovation must end. American technology should never be a tool of tyranny,” the SCCCP warned. (ani)
