Share DolphinGemma with the research community
Recognizing the value of collaboration in scientific discovery, we plan to share DolphinGemma as an open model this summer. While being trained on the calls of Atlantic spotted dolphins, its potential usefulness is anticipated for researchers studying other cetacean species such as bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins. Vocalizations of different species may require fine-tuning, but the open nature of the model facilitates this adaptation.
By providing tools like DolphinGemma, we hope to give researchers around the world the tools to mine their own acoustic datasets, accelerate the search for patterns, and deepen our understanding of these intelligent marine mammals.
We have a long way to go to understand dolphin communication, but the combination of WDP’s intense field research, Georgia Tech’s engineering expertise, and the power of Google’s technology is opening up exciting new possibilities. We no longer just listen. We are beginning to understand patterns in sound, paving the way to a future where the gap between human and dolphin communication may narrow just a little.
