Last week, the White House released a National Security Memorandum on AI Governance and Risk Management. NSM issues guidance to national security agencies on:

Development of AI procurement and utilization. Protect the security of your AI infrastructure from foreign interference. Evaluate AI models that pose security and safety risks to the public. Build AI talent and capabilities within the U.S. government.

The memo also formally authorizes the U.S. Department of Commerce’s AI Safety Institute as the federal government’s primary point of contact for AI assessments and calls for national AI research resources to share AI development resources with academics, civil society, and communities. It emphasizes gender. All over America.

See below for a statement from Future of Life Institute US policy expert Hamza Chaudhry on the new NSM and its implications for secure AI development.

“The National Security Memo released this week is an important step toward recognizing and addressing the risks inherent in unchecked AI development, particularly in the areas of defense, national security, and weapons of war.

“This memo includes initiatives that would make the United States and the world safer from AI threats and uncertainties, including authorizing the U.S. Department of Commerce’s AI Safety Institute and increasing AI expertise across major governments.” agency and department, which included many commendable actions, efforts, and recommendations.”

“At the same time, we express caution against taking a purely competitive approach to AI development. , it is important to proactively collaborate with strategic competitors, in addition to close allies and partners, to develop international AI governance that fosters the development and use of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. It becomes difficult to create a stable and responsible framework for progress.

“The release of this memo represents progress in securing the deployment of AI in national security and other areas, but it is only the beginning of the urgent action that is needed. It is important to move from voluntary initiatives to mandatory requirements, and it is essential that the memo’s prescriptions and recommendations are reflected in policy, regardless of the outcome of the next election.
