U.S. AI Security Institute establishes new U.S. government task force to collaborate on research and testing AI models to manage national security capabilities and risks

Washington DC — Today, the National Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Security at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the creation of the Testing Risks of AI for National Security (TRAINS) Task Force, which brings together partners from across the U.S. government. I did. Identify, measure, and manage new national security and public safety impacts brought about by rapidly evolving AI technologies. The announcement comes as the United States is set to host the first-ever International Network of AI Safety Labs in San Francisco.

This task force will provide support for radiological and nuclear security, chemical and biological security, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, conventional military capabilitiesetc.

These efforts will advance the U.S. government’s commitment to maintain U.S. leadership in AI development and prevent adversaries from exploiting U.S. innovation to undermine national security.

The TRAINS Task Force is chaired by the American AI Safety Institute and includes initial representation from the following federal agencies:

including the Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and National Security AgencyDepartment of Energy and its 10 national laboratories Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (including CISA) Department of Homeland Security Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Each member will lend their unique subject matter expertise, technical infrastructure, and resources to the task force, collaborate on developing new AI assessment methodologies and benchmarks, and conduct joint national security risk assessments and red team exercises. .

“Enabling safe, secure, and trusted AI innovation is not just an economic priority, it is a public safety and national security imperative,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “Every corner of the country is being impacted by the rapid advances in AI, which is why the creation of the TRAINS Task Force brings together federal resources to ensure we are doing everything we can to ensure we address this generation-defining technology challenge.” “This is a very important step to take action.” The U.S. AI Security Institute will centralize and continue to lead the leading national security and AI expertise across the government to harness the benefits of AI for the betterment of the American people and American business. This effort operationalizes a whole-of-government approach to AI safety, as directed in the recent National Security Memorandum on AI, and the TRAINS Task Force will expand membership across the federal government as the work continues. is expected to expand.
