Artist Rights Alliance’s Annie Lennox speaks out on anti-deepfakes campaign

CAMPBELL, California — Musician and activist Annie Lennox, along with music industry nonprofit Artist Rights Alliance, is expanding their call for lawmakers to take meaningful action to combat the ongoing deepfake explosion. joined the coalition to

Ban Deepfakes is a diverse group of organizations and individuals calling for meaningful accountability and responsibility at every step of the deepfake supply chain, including AI companies. Supporters include celebrities such as author Steven Pinker and actor Ashley Judd, and members include the National Organization for Women, Equality Now, SAG-AFTRA, Plan International, and the Future of Life Institute. and so on.

Lennox, founder of The Circle, an NGO dedicated to creating a safer and more just world for marginalized women and girls around the world, wrote: . “Deepfake technology is creating new areas of sexual abuse, primarily against women and girls, and is rapidly expanding. We need to hold the technology companies whose models enable this harm to be held accountable.”

The Artist Rights Alliance recently launched a call for AI companies to protect musicians from the harms of technology, and more than 200 prominent artists, including Billie Eilish, Chapel Lawn, and Jon Bon Jovi, Signed. Executive Director Jen Jacobsen explained: “AI deepfake tools, when used unethically and irresponsibly, can cause significant harm to artists and their livelihoods. To stop exploitation across the creative industry, lawmakers need to step in and give consent. We need to establish clear rules for all parties involved in the production and distribution of unlicensed and unauthorized AI images, audio, and video.”

There is overwhelming bipartisan support for U.S. legislation to ban deepfakes, including support from the American public for holding AI developers accountable when their image-generating models are used to cause harm. 75% of respondents agree. As AI capabilities improve, creating and distributing life-shaking deepfakes is becoming faster, cheaper, and easier. Lawmakers must act now.
