Arizona launched the Artificial Intelligence Steering Committee on Wednesday to ensure that state and local agencies are responsibly and ethically adopting emerging technologies.
The goal of the 13-member committee, consisting of experts from government, education, law enforcement, academia and private sector, is to develop a statewide AI policy framework that emphasizes transparency, equity and accountability.
“Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how we live, work and govern,” Hobbs said in a press release. “Arizona has a responsibility to lead with integrity while promoting innovation in this growing high-tech sector. This committee ensures that AI is implemented in a way that expands opportunities, strengthens public trust and delivers better results for all Arizonan.”
The Steering Committee is tasked with developing guidelines for AI adoption across state agencies, engaging with the community, ensuring comprehensive AI implementation, and identifying opportunities to enhance AI literacy and workforce readiness.
Arizona has joined dozens of other states that have established a task force to assess AI, including Illinois, Rhode Island and Washington.
The committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting this month and will release its first recommendation by 2026.
