Experience a global expansion of AI courses and resources
AI has the potential to drive the greatest social, economic, and scientific transformation in history, and we need to ensure that this technology benefits as many people as possible.
One key way to do this is to develop the next wave of thinkers, researchers, and AI leaders through access to AI education. It is equally important that these new generations are diverse and bring different perspectives that are essential to creating AI solutions that meet society’s needs.
However, not all young people currently have access to AI education and resources.
Now, Google DeepMind and the Raspberry Pi Foundation are expanding access to the Experience AI program.
This comprehensive introductory course is designed for educators who want to teach 11- to 14-year-old students the basics of AI through responsible, interactive classroom materials, activities, and video tutorials. Created in collaboration with education experts, our materials align with proven learning and development practices. Now, we aim to expand the reach of the Experience AI program globally and empower more students for an AI-enabled world.
Expanding access to meet the demand for AI education
Since its launch last year, Experience AI has reached more than 200,000 students around the world and received requests for translated materials from educators in countries such as Canada, Kenya, and Romania.
Initially focused on the UK and particularly encouraging access for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, demand for the program has led to the program expanding its reach and preparing more students for an AI-enabled world. An investment of £1 million was made. This investment will help us work with regional delivery partners to customize and translate experiential AI lessons and enable the training of thousands of teachers to deliver experiential AI lessons in the classroom.
Google DeepMind and the Raspberry Pi Foundation have formed a global group of organizations at the forefront of the AI literacy movement, providing training for local educators to teach lessons to students. The first phase of the expansion is currently underway and letters of intent have been signed with:
Asociatia Techsoup (Romania) provides local nonprofits, schools, libraries, and charities with the latest technology resources and training to drive social change. Digital Moment (Canada) is dedicated to equipping young changemakers with critical digital skills such as coding and data literacy. , AI through dynamic educational experiences for social good. They advocate for ethical innovation and inclusive learning, providing diverse young people with the tools and opportunities to shape bright futures. TechKidz Africa (Kenya) is developing the next generation of technology innovators with customized technology programs in robotics, coding, and digital design.
Promoting initiatives to increase diversity in AI
By expanding Experience AI globally, we also aim to further foster a more diverse community of scientists, engineers, and AI leaders to responsibly develop and deploy AI technologies. The increased expressive power in AI allows for a wide variety of values to shape its design and use.
This commitment to inclusivity extends to other initiatives and collaborations, including:
Scholarships and Fellowships: We provide funding to universities to support the provision of scholarships to underrepresented students pursuing graduate study in AI and related fields. This includes building a diverse community of AI students and researchers, including providing financial aid, mentorship from Google DeepMind researchers and engineers, and access to AI conferences and events. Our fellowships provide postdoctoral funding and mentoring to young researchers from groups that are underrepresented in AI-related fields. In addition to financial support, we also offer fellows the opportunity to receive mentorship from senior researchers at Google DeepMind. AIMS AI for Science Masters: In September 2023, we supported the new “AI for Science” Pan-African Masters program through collaboration with the African Institute. Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa, a one-year residency program designed to build AI skills for scientists. Deep Learning Indaba: We have supported this annual gathering that unites over 800 members. Google DeepMind researchers spontaneously co-founded this event, which brings participants from the African AI community together for a week of education, research, and discussion on the latest AI advances.
let everyone have a say
For AI to truly benefit everyone, it must be influenced by everyone. This diversity ensures that AI technology suits everyone’s needs and realizes the potential of AI to be one of the most important technologies ever invented. It’s important.
As we strive to develop AI that benefits humanity, we continue to keep education at the core of our mission and invite educators, students, enthusiasts, and everyone in between to join us.
