A new wave of AI security technology is quietly revolutionizing the way stores fight theft by seeing how you move. Paris-based startup Veesion has developed a gesture recognition algorithm that flags shoplifting behavior without tracking its appearance or identity.
The technology is used in 5,000 stores in the US, Canada and Europe. Retailers can help reduce losses without disrupting the shopping experience.
Prevent theft with AI that “monitors” movement
Veesion’s system integrates with the store’s existing security camera network and uses AI to analyze body movements over time.
If it detects a suspicious gesture, such as hiding an item or quickly putting the item in a bag, it flags the footage and sends a clip that saves the staff for review.

“The algorithm doesn’t care how people look. It cares about how your body parts move over time,” co-founder Bnoît Koenig said in an interview with Business Insider.
