On June 2nd, we are excited to host two of the most keen thinkers on Tech Power. Lina Kahn, a professor of Columbia law and former FTC chairman, joins Karen Hao for a conversation about AI at the event to celebrate the launch of Karen’s new book, Empire of Eye: Dreams and Nightmare.
Karen Hao is an award-winning journalist covering artificial intelligence. She was the first journalist to showcase Openai, and wrote an AI Empire book about the Penguin Press company and the AI industry. Previously, Karen was a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, focusing on AI and China, and was a senior editor at MIT Technology Review. Her work was awarded the American Humanist Media Award in 2024 and the American National Magazine Award in 2022. Karen began her career as an application engineer at the first startup to spin out of Google (X). She received BS from MIT in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Research Minors.
Lina Khan served as chairman of the Federal Trade Commission from June 15, 2021 to January 20, 2025. Khan started under antitrust as a business journalist and researcher investigating the integration of the entire market, from airlines to chicken agriculture. While at the FTC, Khan exercised the full suite of FTC’s legal authority, regularly focusing on engagement and listening to the public, ensuring that the institution is updating its tools and skill sets to tackle the realities of the new market and the challenges of the next generation. Priority initiatives include re-acting antitrust laws and consumer protection enforcement, addressing non-competitive clauses, protecting sensitive data from unconfirmed surveillance, and assuming illegal activities that allow Americans to access affordable, high-quality healthcare.
Prior to joining FTC, Kern served as a counsel for the U.S. House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law. She is currently an associate professor of law at Columbia Law School.
