Reddit users’ comments were used to train AI chatbots. Social Media Platforms Sues Artificial Intelligence Companies

Social media platform Reddit sued humanity, an artificial intelligence company on Wednesday, training chatbot Claude, claiming it was illegally “scraping” comments from millions of Reddit users. Reddit claims that despite humanity being asked to use automated bots to not do so, he accessed Reddit content and was “deliberately trained in the personal data of Reddit users without requesting consent.” Humanity said in a statement that it opposed Reddit’s claim.

Reddit filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court in San Francisco on Wednesday. “AI companies should not be allowed to rub information or content from people without any clear restrictions on how they can use that data,” Reddit Chief Justice Officer Ben Lee said in a statement Wednesday.

Reddit previously has entered into license agreements with Google, Openai and other companies that pay to train AI systems for public commentary for more than 100 million users on Reddit. These agreements “have now enabled us to implement meaningful protections for users, including the content, the right to remove your privacy protections, and the right to prevent users from being spamed using this content,” the AP said.

The licensing transaction also helped raise funds ahead of the Wall Street debut as a company 20 years ago, which was published among those who stood to benefit last year.

Humanity was formed by former Openai executives in 2021, and its flagship Claude Chatbot remains an important competitor for Openai’s ChatGpt. Openai has a close relationship with Microsoft, but Anthropic’s main commercial partner is Amazon. This improves the widely used Alexa Voice Assistant using Claude.

Like other AI companies, humanity relies heavily on websites such as Wikipedia and Reddit, which are deep stages of written material that helps to teach AI assistants the patterns of human language. People are showering, whether it focuses on gardening, history, relationship advice, or thought. In 2023, he argued the Humanitarian Copyright Office that “the way Claude was trained qualifies as a typical legal use of material.” It already fights lawsuits from major music publishers who claim that Claude will reverse the lyrics of copyrighted songs.

However, Reddit’s lawsuit differs from other lawsuits brought against AI companies because it does not alleges copyright infringement. Instead, it focuses on allegedly breaching Reddit’s terms of use, saying that an unfair competition was created.
