A new bipartisan bill introduced by senators on December 19th would create an AI Safety Review Office at the Department of Commerce, led by a White House-appointed Under Secretary of Commerce for AI Safety.
The bipartisan Maintaining America’s Advantage in AI Act would require the new office to work with industry to protect frontier AI models from abuse by foreign adversaries seeking to misuse the technology.
The bill is supported by Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Jack Reed, Jerry Moran, R-Kan., Angus King, I-Main, and Maggie Hassan (D-Main). H.) and was prepared based on the following: Frameworks previously released by the group.
The new office’s mission is to protect U.S. national security from extreme risks such as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cyber threats posed by the Frontier Model, a cutting-edge AI model that has yet to be developed. Protecting your insurance will be your priority.
“While AI has the potential to dramatically improve and transform the way we live, it also comes with significant risks to national security. We have worked to transform the framework into bipartisan legislation.”

Lawmakers said the bill would create a new bureau under the Commerce Department to work with frontier aluminum companies, large data centers, and infrastructure-as-a-service providers to prevent adversaries from exploiting these industries.
