The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is embarking on an ambitious initiative to transform legislative processes using artificial intelligence (AI).

The country’s new AI-led regulatory plan aims not only to streamline the creation of new laws, but also to review and amend existing laws and set the stage for a groundbreaking approach to governance in the Gulf region. British media say plans that state media calls “AI-led regulations” are more advanced than similar efforts seen in other countries. media.

“This new legislative system with artificial intelligence will change the way laws are created and will change the way processes are created, making the process faster and more accurate,” said Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Makthum, ruler of Dubai and vice president of the UAE.

Last week, the UAE minister approved the establishment of a Regulatory Information Bureau to oversee the AI initiative. The office oversees the creation of a vast database compiling federal and local law, along with public sector data, including court rulings and government services. This database is expected to regularly propose legislation updates, and accelerate up to 70% of the law.

The UAE AI ambitions go beyond just efficiency. Experts suggest that the country may aim to make AI “co-scholars” by proactively proposing legal changes through analysis of legal and government data. However, the project is not without its challenges. Experts warn of potential bias in AI data and concerns about interpretation of the law.

Despite these challenges, researchers note that the centralized governmental structure of the UAE allows for faster implementation of such technologies compared to democratic countries. However, experts emphasize the importance of monitoring to ensure that AI proposals are practical and remain suitable for real applications.
