CAMPBELL, Calif. – Future of Life Institute (FLI) Executive Director Anthony Aguirre today issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s veto of California’s landmark AI regulation bill, SB 1047. did.
“The Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 1047 is extremely disappointing. SB1047 simply requires the largest AI companies to implement basic security measures for these extremely powerful systems to prevent catastrophic accidents and misuse. The veto was intended to hold Californians accountable for the voluntary commitments they had already made to perform sex tests. It leaves the system vulnerable to significant risks posed by rapid and unregulated development. Additionally, the potential for AI disasters that could shut down the industry is greatly increased, resulting in surprises brought about by AI innovations. Benefits that should be gained are at risk.
“The intense lobbying against this bill can only be rationally interpreted in one direction: that these companies play by their own rules and believe they should not be accountable to anyone. This veto only strengthens that belief. Now is the time to enact legislation at the state, federal, and global levels to hold Big Tech companies to their promises and ensure that AI systems are developed safely and responsibly. ”
Despite overwhelming bipartisan support from the general public, civil society groups, lawmakers, and AI experts, the bill faced fierce opposition from Big Tech and its academic representatives. And even after making substantial modifications to address reasonable concerns, the industry continues to push forward with outdated and easily disprovable claims, often with clear financial and personal incentives. I continued.
We have created an explanation of SB1047 to address FAQs and debunk some common misconceptions.
