Unlike the 2024 and the 2023 UK AI Safety Summit, which focuses primarily on AI governance and safety, the AI Action Summit in France has a broader approach to AI open source capabilities and technology that is employed. It is set up to adopt a way to rebuild the market. .
The event will also focus on building a new global AI platform, promoting the use of technology, helping to eliminate the concentration of AI capabilities by a limited number of people.
“I can’t become Wild West,” French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters Friday. “We need rules, and there are all kinds of areas that don’t want AI because we don’t want discrimination or large-scale control in our society.”
The event is due to Europe struggling to keep up with the AI capabilities of the US and China. Openai’s two top competitors – Mistral AI in France and Aleph Alpha in Germany – are located in Europe, but business leaders are worried that overregulation in the EU could hinder innovation.
Experts also cite the lack of proper talent and risk-intolerant nature of European venture capitalists as obstacles to the EU’s AI capabilities.
“There’s a wake-up call in Europe, and I think it’s really important to innovate,” said Anne Bouverot, special envoy to the French President of AI. .
The focus of the French AI Action Summit, which focuses on open source models, could attract more attention following the launch of the open source R1 inference model on January 20th. The model of Chinese AI company Deepseek is comparable to Openai features, but it’s cheaper to send The Tech Stock, which plunges in the US last week (see Deepseek’s new AI model shaking the US tech industry).
The fear about AI Doom, led by closed players who control the conversation during the British AI Safety Summit, could bring AI safety and democratization to a central stage at the French Action Summit. French government (see: rights groups invoke the shortcomings of the EU treaty on AI).
“This is, first and foremost, a diplomatic move aimed at promoting the convergence of AI governance and creating debates about the impact AI has on society,” said Forester vice president Thomas Husson.
“President Macron’s decision to hold a summit in Paris also makes France’s ability to confirm that France is one of the major global destinations for foreign investment in artificial intelligence, and the ability to make France’s capabilities in the global AI race. and aims to showcase the assets,” he said.
