Generated AI models such as ChatGpt, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini are increasingly embedded in workplace operations, and the issue of AI’s impact on critical thinking is being scrutinized. As these tools become more refined and widely adopted, the balance between efficiency and independent thinking has changed in a promising and concerning way.
A recent study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft research focuses on how knowledge workers interact with cognitive trade-offs that relate to AI-generated content. The study uncovers subtle transformations based on a study of 319 experts. AI can reduce the mental effort required for many tasks, but it can also reduce critical engagement in certain contexts.
How AI is changing critical thinking in the workplace
One of the most prominent findings of this study was that 62% of participants reported that they were engaged in less critical thinking, particularly when using AI on routine or low-betting tasks. Conversely, those who were confident in their expertise were 27% more likely to critically evaluate the output of AI-generated AI-generated, rather than accepting it at face value.
