Oregon House passes a bill to limit the title of “Nurse” to humans.

Salem, Oregon (Katu) – The Oregon House of Representatives passed House Bill 2748. This is a measure that ensures that the title “Nurse” is reserved exclusively for human practitioners, except for artificial intelligence systems and other non-human organizations.

Representative Travis Nelson, who introduced the bill, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and trust of nursing professions. “As a registered nurse, I understand the dedication and expertise needed to win this title,” Nelson said. “It’s important to act to protect patients and maintain the inherent trust in our profession, especially as AI continues to evolve in healthcare.”

The law addresses concerns that AI programs labeled as “nurse” could mislead patients and undermine the integrity of their profession.

This bill comes as an anti-legal trend across the country. The Oregon House proposed a bill that criminalized the spread of pornography or sexually explicit photographs created through artificial intelligence, commonly known as deepfakes.

Deepfakes can be used indiscriminately against humans and can also be used to create child abuse materials. 31 other states have already adopted similar laws.

Current Oregon law protects individual titles “Nurse,” but does not extend this protection against use by AI-powered systems or non-human entities.

By limiting nursing practice use to human practitioners, the bill aims to maintain clarity and trust in patient care. House Bill 2748 will be moved to the Oregon Senate for consideration.
