According to a Reuters report, US president Bill Foster has introduced legislation aimed at preventing Nvidia’s smuggling of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips.

The proposed bill seeks to mandate chip makers to implement mechanisms to track chip locations after sales and ensure that unauthorized chips cannot be activated.

The law has attracted support from both Democrats and Republican lawmakers, reflecting bipartisan concerns about the national security risks posed by China’s unfair AI development.

The bill requires the US Department of Commerce to draft regulations within six months to implement these measures.

Foster parents and technology experts argue that the required tracking techniques are already embedded in current chips.

The law follows reports showing that Nvidia chips are being used in advances in China’s AI, including those by deepseek, despite export restrictions.

Nvidia, a leading AI chip supplier, has worked closely with the US government to develop products that comply with export regulations while maintaining their presence in the Chinese market.

However, the company warns that tightening US export restrictions could hinder product development and force businesses to be forced from certain countries.

The proposed legislation represents a critical step in the US government’s efforts to control the flow of advanced AI technology to China and protect national security interests.
