FRANKFORT, Ky. (WCHS) — Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a popular technology, but to what extent should it be regulated? A special committee of Kentucky lawmakers investigated the issue and made recommendations to the General Assembly.

“It has the potential to change our daily lives, so we need to ensure guardrails are in place to ensure it is used effectively, efficiently and responsibly.” said Josh Bray, Rockcastle County Representative and Co-Chairman. of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force.

He says the technology has its benefits, but could be problematic if it falls into the wrong hands.

“The task force will likely introduce several bills to establish a framework for the use of artificial intelligence in state government,” Bray said.

“Generative AI is a tool, so it depends on who has access to that tool and how they use that tool,” said Dr. Sean Schulenberg, chair of the Marshall University Presidential AI Task Force.

Current artificial intelligence technology has become popular over the past two years, he says. He welcomed the work of the Kentucky task force.

“It is important for us, especially in the United States, to take advantage of this technology and build on it in a safe and productive way because we are in a dangerous situation on many fronts,” Dr. Schulenberg said.

The next Kentucky General Assembly convenes in January, and officials say they expect to see a number of bills related to artificial intelligence technology.
