Mr. Olatubosun Arake, Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology;

As part of its efforts to embrace digital transformation, Lagos State has announced its intention to issue Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines, paving the way for responsible use of the technology.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Olatubosun Arake, announced the idea at the 4th Zenith Bank Tech Fair held in Lagos yesterday.

Alake said the regulations are being prepared in collaboration with the Federal AI Collective and are expected to be completed in the first or second quarter of next year.

He said, “This initiative will pave the way for responsible AI development in Nigeria and reflect the nation’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement.”

“Our digital initiatives, including our Enterprise Architecture project, are standardizing and harmonizing digital data assets for effective AI implementation.”

He continued: “This work is critical to delivering tailored services to our citizens and ensuring we are prepared for the onslaught of AI.”

“The impact of AI will be felt whether we are ready or not, making platforms like this (Zenith Bank Tech Fair) essential to fostering a proactive approach. .”

In addition, Lagos State, through its Scientific Research and Innovation Council, funds AI initiatives of local universities such as the University of Lagos and Lagos State.

The council is funding these projects to increase academic contributions to the fields of AI, blockchain and infrastructure development.

Mr. Oladejo Olawunmi, Director of Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions at the National Information Technology Development Authority (NITDA), spoke on the panel and highlighted the relevance of AI law and the agency’s role in developing the legal framework for AI.

“When we discuss AI, we are talking about transparency, trust, and data security. What we are doing at NITDA is bringing together stakeholders to draft regulations that will guide the industry. “That’s what we do,” he said.

NITDA is currently working on a national AI strategy that includes discussions with national and international experts on the future direction of AI in Nigeria.

“This comprehensive approach aims to not only help the country catch up with global AI developments, but also create a strong regulatory environment that supports long-term growth,” Olawunmi added.
