Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) announced today Tuesday that it has joined forces with Dell Technologies to develop a new AI (AI) platform that advances research into cybersecurity, sustainability, healthcare and robotics.

The university said the new AI platform powered by the Dell PowerEdge XE9680 server will help researchers “get real-time insights into large datasets and develop advanced AI models that enhance research.”

The research team at TUS’ Athlone-based software research institute focuses on driving innovation in the fields of cybersecurity, cloud edge computing, robotics control, smart agriculture and healthcare.

Dell-powered AI platforms will also be used under the Enterprise Ireland-funded and based in TUS’s Software Institute-based COMAND Technology Gateway programme, which will develop large-scale language model (LLM)-based chatbots to support senior care, mimic lines automation, and robotics using imitation learning.

The new AI platform will be utilized to support several research projects led by Horizon Europe, the European Union’s leading funding program for research and innovation.

The projects include EU-funded EUR 7 million euros aimed at making digital infrastructure safer and more resilient to cyberattacks, and Resilmesh aimed at the Soilcrates project dedicated to revitalizing and preserving soil health by strengthening soil literacy, monitoring soil structure, promoting biodiversity and optimizing crop conditions.

“Utilizing the power of AI is becoming increasingly important for research in critical fields such as cybersecurity and robotics, and requires the analysis of larger data sets,” said Dr. Yuansong Qiao, a senior research fellow at TUS’s Software Institute.

“That’s why it’s important that TUS has the right infrastructure to manage intensive workloads of advanced AI-driven research.

“The collaboration with Dell Technologies provides these capabilities, allowing researchers to build highly complex AI models to explore and test more effective defense systems in cybersecurity and other domains.”

“As a global leader in computers, Dell Technologies is at the forefront of enterprise AI adoption, providing cutting-edge technology and expertise that organizations across Ireland and around the world need to adopt, adopt, scale and farm AI,” said Jason Ward, Vice President and Managing Director of EMEA North at Dell Technologies Ireland.

“This work represents a illustrious example of Dell’s dedication to expanding the European AI ecosystem through AI solutions and expertise.

“This high-performance AI infrastructure accelerates groundbreaking research and enhances innovation that will shape the future.”

Used by Athlone’s Software Research Institute, the Dell PowerEdge XE9680 is a “high-performance server designed to provide exceptional performance for AI and high-performance computing.”

PowerEdge servers also offer robust security with a cyber-resilient architecture. It is a multi-layered approach designed to protect your systems, detect threats, and ensure comprehensive data protection at all levels.

As part of our long-standing relationship with TUS, Dell offers a wide range of cloud computing, data centers, infrastructure solutions, and laptops and endpoint devices.
