James Cameron’s U-turn in Hollywood AI
James shared his opinion on the use of AI in Hollywood. He joined the board of directors of Stability AI in September last year. During the conversation, he shared how his anti-ai posture has changed, according to deadlines.
James said, “The goal was to understand space and understand what they’re doing in the minds of developers. What are they targeting? What is the development cycle? How much resources do you have to throw it over? Dune, Dune: Part 2, or one of my films or a movie with a lot of CG with lots of big effects — you need to figure out how to cut that cost by half.”
The filmmaker said, “Now it’s not laying off half of the staff and effects companies. That’s how you double the speed on a given shot. That’s why cadence is faster, faster throughput cycles, artists do other cool things and do other cool things.
James previously denounced the use of AI in 2023, referring to the 1984 hit film The Terminator. He told CTV News: “I warned you in 1984, but I didn’t listen. The weaponization of AI is the biggest danger. I don’t think there’s anything that will drive the audience. Let’s wait 20 years.
James Cameron’s AI reversal sparks fan debate
James Cameron’s AI U-turn sparked fan debate. Some praised his positive thoughts, while others accused him of being a hypocrite.
“I knew James Cameron hated most of the crew, but wow… I already hated him a few things, but Jesus is yes.”
Social media is Buzz with arguments for and against AI in filmmaking, with fans focusing on efficiency, cost, work and creativity.
“It’s not “yes,” but if you have an artist, I trust you to use the technology to maintain artistry and promote creative potential, if you have an artist.
“James Cameron gets it. AI is a tool that allows creative people to create faster, iterate faster and move on to their next project,” another shared.
Fans highlighted the importance of AI support in filmmaking, saying, “If James Cameron gets it, you need to get it. In the long run, the cost of a big hit will be zero regardless.”
“James Cameron has also stopped walking to AI Dumba**,” a social media user shared, “I’m not sure if James Cameron is looking for a way to not lay off staff.”
One social media user shared another, “It means that both Dune and Dune part 2 survived without using AI and there was no need to lay off staff lmfao I love James Cameron, but this is not a man.”
