In December, we shared our commitment to the White House’s Genesis Mission, a national effort to leverage AI to double the pace of American scientific discovery within 10 years. Since then, Google DeepMind (GDM) announced an early access program to provide AI for scientific tools to all 17 of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratories, and Google Public Sector shared how Gemini for Government will serve as the DOE’s AI backbone.
Today, at DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026, we are expanding on this by pledging $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to researchers supporting the Genesis mission.
Frontier AI tools for scientific discovery
Under this expanded commitment, we will first provide DOE’s Genesis mission winners with in-kind access to GDM’s cutting-edge AI portfolio for science, including:
AlphaEvolve — Gemini-powered coding and discovery agent for designing advanced algorithms. AlphaFold 3 — Models for predicting the structure and interactions of proteins and other biomolecules. AlphaGenome — A tool for understanding how variation in DNA, including non-coding genomes, shapes biology and disease. WeatherNext — A family of cutting-edge AI weather prediction models for mapping weather conditions. AlphaEarth Foundations — Fundamental AI models for mapping and understanding the Earth in more detail than ever before.
We will then provide Gemini for Government seats and tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users across DOE national laboratory operations, research, and management teams. This secure platform supports a wide range of tasks, from research benches to managing specialized user facilities that serve the entire scientific community, providing a single secure foundation on which DOE missions can rely.
Powering AI for scientific tools across the lab ecosystem
Although we still have much work to do, the practical impact of the Genesis mission is already beginning to be felt across the laboratory ecosystem.
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge uses AlphaEvolve to plan large-scale mathematical systems that are too complex for humans to explore by hand. AI automatically discovers hidden connections and fast-tracks discoveries that typically take researchers years to discover.
“Modern mathematics relies on abstraction, but combinatorics provides concrete models that make complex geometry and algebra easier to understand. We found that systems like AlphaEvolve are ideal for this exploration,” said Dr. Kvinge. “By leveraging LLM’s extensive mathematical knowledge, we can automate the exploration of an infinite number of angles. Although we are still experimenting, our discoveries are already starting to shape future research.”
At the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), researchers are using Gemini to fundamentally change the way they interact with physics lab hardware. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon, a senior materials data scientist at NLR, leads a pioneering program in autonomous materials discovery.
“Our collaboration has allowed us to build autonomous experimental capabilities,” Dr. Spurgeon said. “By implementing Gemini on our instruments, we have reduced microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to approximately 13 minutes (8x faster) and reduced the manual steps required to focus an image from 50 to 2. We’ve reduced that time and attention back to the science itself, enabling a truly autonomous workflow that observes, infers, and makes decisions in real time. This allows us to explore parts of the material design space that we couldn’t reach with manual intervention alone.”
