Google’s industrial robot AI Play makes physical AI a priority

When Google incorporates Moonshot into its core business, it’s not a housecleaning exercise. It’s about making a bet. On February 25, Alphabet-owned Intrinsic, which builds AI models and software designed to make industrial robots more accessible, officially joined Google.

The company will continue to exist as its own group within Google, working closely with Google DeepMind and leveraging Gemini AI models and Google Cloud. The purchase price was not disclosed.

On the surface, this looks like routine internal human resources. it’s not.

From moonshot to mandate

Intrinsic joined the Alphabet-owned independent company in 2021 after five years of development within Alphabet’s X, Alphabet’s moonshot research arm, the same factory that produced Waymo and Wing. Its mission from the beginning has been to make industrial robotics AI available to manufacturers who don’t have an army of professional engineers.

Although hardware such as robotic arms has become cheaper, programming them is still incredibly complex, often requiring hundreds of hours of manual coding by specialized engineers, which can vary depending on the specific robot. Intrinsic’s answer to that is Flowstate, a web-based platform that allows users to build robotic applications without writing thousands of lines of code.

The platform is designed to be hardware, software, and AI model agnostic. Think of this as an operating layer rather than a product. Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly compared it directly to Android. “He said this is the Android of robotics,” said Intrinsic CEO Wendy Tan White, noting that Pichai worked on Chrome and Android before becoming CEO.

Why now, why Google?

Timing is not arbitrary. The hiring of Boston Dynamics’ CTO, the release of a standalone robotics SDK, and now the acquisition of Intrinsic represents an intentional integration of robotics capabilities at the core of Google. Taken together, these moves put Google in a position to offer manufacturers something that competitors haven’t put together as cleanly. That means AI models from DeepMind, deployment software from Intrinsic, and cloud infrastructure from Google Cloud, all under one roof.

Google also partnered with Boston Dynamics last month to integrate Gemini into its Atlas humanoid robot built for manufacturing environments, while Google DeepMind hired a former Boston Dynamics CTO in November.

The industrial robot AI market that Google is chasing is not small. McKinsey predicts that the general purpose robot market could reach US$370 billion by 2040.

What it means for companies

For corporate decision makers, the more interesting signal here is not the technology, but the change in accessibility. Google will integrate Intrinsic’s robotics development platform and vision models with its broader AI ecosystem, combining advanced inference, recognition, and learning capabilities with industrial-grade robotics software to help machines better interpret sensor data, adapt to dynamic environments, and perform complex tasks.

Intrinsic has also expanded through acquisitions, acquiring Open Source Robotics Corp., the commercial arm of the foundation behind the Robot Operating System (ROS), in 2022. And its commercial pipeline is already underway. In October 2025, Intrinsic entered into a strategic partnership with Foxconn focused on developing general-purpose intelligent robots for complete factory automation in electronics manufacturing.

White framed the integration around terms that are hard for company leaders to ignore: production economics, operational innovation, and what she describes as truly advanced manufacturing, all of which are within reach with Google’s infrastructure fully behind them.

That’s an important claim. But now that Gemini, DeepMind, and Google Cloud are working together behind the scenes, for the first time there’s actually an infrastructure to back it up.
