New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Ministry of Science and Technology on Wednesday launched India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) databank aimed at driving innovation and strengthening the country’s national security.
This effort provides researchers, startups, and developers with access to high-quality, diverse datasets essential to creating scalable and comprehensive AI solutions.
It was launched by Minister of Science and Technology (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh during the 7th edition of ASSOCHAM AI Leadership Meet 2024.
The event, themed ‘AI for India: Driving India’s AI Development – Innovation, Ethics and Governance’, showcased India’s strategic roadmap to harness the transformative potential of AI .
The AI databank will enhance “national security through real-time analysis of satellite, drone and IoT data,” the minister said.
This is also in line with the country’s goal of leveraging AI for predictive analytics in disaster management and cybersecurity.
AI is “an essential tool, but it must be handled responsibly, properly, and used optimally,” Singh said.
The Minister also highlighted the pivotal role of AI in reshaping various sectors such as governance, business, healthcare, education, and space exploration. He emphasized that AI is fundamental to India’s future development and can drive economic growth and address pressing challenges such as climate change, public service delivery and national security.
At the event, Singh reaffirmed India’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair AI system, along with a robust governance framework being developed to address challenges such as algorithmic bias and data privacy. . The Minister emphasized the government’s focus on leveraging AI to empower the people and ensure equal access to the benefits of this innovative technology. He said AI needs to fill gaps rather than create them, and it must empower people without replacing them.
The event served as a platform for thought leaders, policy makers, and industry experts to exchange insights and chart a responsible path for AI adoption in India.
