Some say that artificial intelligence (AI) has changed healthcare in ways that could not have been imagined just a few years ago. It is now used for everything from documents to help doctors make a better diagnosis. But like new technologies, risk is involved.

Today, AI is a powerful defensive mechanism and an attacker enabler. Therefore, the questions you need to ask are clear. Is AI an enemy of healthcare or a friend of cybersecurity? Honestly, the answer is both.

AI as a Defender: Strengthening Healthcare Security

The healthcare system is a rich target for malicious actorssignificant protected health information (PHI) is spreading across interconnected assets such as electronic health records, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled medical devices, and telehealth platforms. AI-driven threats sound alarms for information security, IT, and healthcare leaders. These risks are reshaping the cybersecurity landscape. Preemptive defense requires advanced AI tools, employee training, and team-wide collaboration that goes beyond functionality. This includes reviews of policy and detection systems, giving AI top priority to combat silenced social engineering and malware. Staying one step ahead of the bad actors requires constant vigilance, innovative thinking, and a core commitment to data safety and patient care.

Balance of AI possibilities and realistic implementation

As an expert or executive, you face the critical decision to manage AI commitments and the risks that it will introduce further into even more complex cybersecurity situations. AI is not the Holy Grail. It’s a tool that we can support and disagree with. The transformational potential of AI in healthcare and security stems from how it is implemented, leading to a balanced approach to adoption. They should be excited and they should be careful, knowing fully that attackers are using the exact same technology to undermine our systems, data and trust.

In my experience, being excited about adopting AI tools such as transcript generators, grammar checkers, or automatic memo reduction systems often takes priority over important security assessments. We’ve seen teams advocate for rapid implementation to save time and resources without assessing risk. Common questions are often not asked, such as where data is stored, how it is processed, and when the vendor is compliant. Healthcare in particular creates gaps that attackers can exploit. In particular, even minor surveillance can lead to major violations of PHI or personally identifiable information (PII).

Deepfakes, adaptive malware, and IoT devices are all powered by AI and require a new type of thinking to deal with these threats. A proactive security framework that includes auditing, employee training and reliable governance. To do this, healthcare workers and managers must be authorized to recognize sophisticated attacks, counterfeit video calls, or other unexpected data transfers that have been flagged by AI. Empowering people is necessary to deploy new technologies.

Drive collaboration between IT, security, and clinical teams in developing customized strategies for technical vulnerabilities and operational realities. This implies vigilance, from monitoring systems to continuing review of the evolving role of AI in agencies.

Protecting the health care system involves protecting the trust and well-being of the patients it cares about and the entire community. This depends entirely on the type of leadership that not only responds to threats, but also takes bold steps to mitigate risk before extension. Security embedded in all aspects of the organization must ensure the continuity of patient operations and uncompromising care by healthcare leaders.
