MCK calls for public participation on AI media guidelines

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is appealing to Kenyans for feedback on draft guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the media.

MCK said in a statement that it has developed media guidelines on the use of AI, data and social media through a technical committee to ensure that the use of AI, data and social media in professional journalism in Kenya is properly and ethically integrated. said.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo said they had prepared four documents for this purpose.

These include the Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya, the Media Handbook for Reporting on AI in Kenya, the Media Guide on the Use of AI in Kenya, and the Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya. Contains. .

Omwoyo added that the invitation was in accordance with the requirements of the Kenyan Constitution, which mandates public participation in policy-making.

“The Council invites the public, stakeholders and all interested parties to submit their views, comments and recommendations on the draft guide,” he said.

“This will result in a review of the guidelines to ensure they reflect a wide range of views and are consistent with industry needs.”

As AI, data and social media tools continue to transform journalism, Omwoyo said it is important to adopt standards that maintain journalistic integrity and maintain public trust.

“These guidelines are designed to help media organizations navigate these technological changes while maintaining professionalism and ethics,” he continued.

“These represent a proactive approach to addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities presented by technological advances in journalism.”

The guidelines are available through a link on the Media Council of Kenya website.

Written submissions must be sent to the Council by email (guidelines@mediacouncil.or.ke) by 26 January 2025.

Mr. Omuwoyo affirmed the Council’s commitment to empowering journalists and media personnel to maintain the highest standards of professionalism while embracing technological innovation.
