Rep. Donald Ojogo and management consultant Dr. awe agboluga have called on the federal government to launch laws on the adoption and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.
They urged the Federal Executive Board to submit a bill to enact the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy by the second quarter of 2026, while also leaving Parliament to tasks to review it and pass it to the law by the fourth quarter of the same year.
The call was held at a one-day research conference hosted by Ado Ekiti (Abuad) of AFE Babalola University on the theme of “Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development: Impact on Nigeria’s government, economy, society and policy decisions.”
Ojogo, representing the Ilaje/ese-Odo federal constituency, highlighted the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to bridge the gap between AI technology and its practical applications. He was represented by Richard Olatunde, and said that AI can provide immediate solutions in healthcare, agriculture, education and environmental management.
He said that by integrating AI models with Indigenous knowledge, he is hoping for continuous assessments to measure AI effectiveness in real time, while promoting innovation tailored to local challenges, particularly in the Riverine community.
On his part, Dr. Agboluga recommended the development of national AI cybersecurity protocols to protect financial institutions and promote corporate accountability. He urged EFCC and specialized institutions such as ANAN and ICAN to introduce ethics training to address algorithm bias and encourage responsible use of AI. He also highlighted the stricter enforcement of the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to protect personal data.
