I know that social media platforms (such as Myspace, Facebook/Meta, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, Reddit, Tiktok, LinkedIn, Weibo, Tumblr, VSCO, etc.) are becoming the mainstays in both personal and professional life. What we all don’t recognize is that behind these innocent use is a dark belly that leads to potential civil and criminal liability against parents, children and other third parties. This same technique brings about creation that sexual predators don’t know about. All social media platforms work using algorithms and some type of artificial intelligence. The program examines the user’s content, engagement with the platform, and how long a user is on the platform. Without notification to users, algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) analyze this data to understand user preferences, with the aim of predicting the type of content the user wants to see. Over time, platform ads and search responses are designed to conform to user preferences. The goal is to provide a better experience for our users. However, for users, these same systems affect the user’s choices and ultimately affect the information they see on social media.
