Newark (WABC) – New Jersey is fighting against the deceptive AI photos, video and audio known as deepfakes.

On Wednesday, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law establishing civil and criminal penalties for those who produce the material.

The new law was partly inspired by a high school incident in which students use AI to place pictures of classmates in pornographic images.

Francesca, 16, fought lawmakers after being targeted by the deepfake images generated by explicit AI.

“The law was fired for all women and teens for nothing happened and just moving forward,” Francesca Mani said.

Two years ago, she and 29 other students posted pornographic images of the Westfield High boy who was not real.

He was suspended all day, but Mani refused to settle, and she went to mission.

“There are boys using this technology, but there are criminals and pedophiles, and they just sneak up completely. So it’s a bigger problem than the lack of law or law really meant something to Francesca,” said her mother, Dorota Mani.

Gov. Murphy has signed a new law to disagree and deepen his commitment to crimes in New Jersey.

He says it’s necessary to keep young people safe.

“Nearly every bad actor can use artificial intelligence at any time to create surreal images and videos that can be exploited by children, teenagers and, frankly, anyone,” Murphy said.

The hope is that New Jersey law becomes federal law.

The law also addresses the issue of AI deepfakes used in politics to deceive voters.

“Deepfake is a powerful tool for deceptions that can undermine public trust,” said New Jersey Lt. Colonel Tahesha Wei.

“Francesca, your case, and cases like you, frankly illuminated the gap between our criminal law and our civil law.

The new law includes very serious penalties for perpetrators, including fines for up to five years behind the bar and fines of $30,000.
