Agent Economy is restructuring the foundations of enterprise artificial intelligence, transforming autonomous agents into new orchestrators of digital infrastructure, services and capital.
As AI evolves from isolated automation to dynamic, multi-agent ecosystems, organizations are rethinking what size, speed and value creation are like. Not only are these intelligent agents optimizing workflows, they tap on APIs, connect distributed computing, and open the door to a whole new business model. According to Mark Castleman, Managing Director of Intel AI Cloud at Intel Corp (pictured), the agent-driven shift, from telecom to fundraising, sets the stage for a more adaptive, responsive, and monetisable AI ecosystem across almost every sector.

“These agents consume APIs too,” Castleman said. “They’re going to raise the service and turn down, push and pull down the data, do the calculations, run other agents and do other things in additional workflows. Think of these things (it’s) acting as a single app breakdown.
Castleman spoke with John Furrier of TheCube at TheCube + NYSE Wired: AI + Cloud Leaders Media Week event. It is currently airing exclusively on TheCube, Siliconangle Media’s live streaming studio. They discussed how the agent economy is transforming AI infrastructure, business models and global strategy by enabling intelligent agents to coordinate workflows, monetize APIs, and accelerate decision-making across the industry.
Agent Economy and New Business Models for AI Infrastructure
The central insights emerging in this agent economy are the idea that APIs are no longer technical interfaces, but the toll roads of tomorrow’s AI economy. Drive the demand for scalable and responsive infrastructure as AI agents improve their ability to initiate tasks, extract data and coordinate decisions. According to Castleman, this makes underutilized systems a valuable asset.
“If agents can put together their actions and we can figure out how to wire them and consume APIs, you have a great business model,” he said. “These apps were consuming services, API services. They are basically immersed in many different data stores to get information and trigger activity.”
This model reconstructs how you think about your app as well. Instead of single-purpose programs built for mass consumption, AI agents can now replicate these features in custom ways. By dismantling traditional apps and allowing agents to connect independently to services such as banks, communications, and healthcare providers, AI becomes more personal and infrastructure providers become platform gatekeepers.
“I don’t have to do one app for 100,000 people. One collection, or an agent collection, is doing something for me,” he said. “It’s cool that you have an account in your mobile provider, you have an account in your bank, and you have health data. Agents can talk to all these different things, push and pull data, and schedule, make deals, and do other things based on other activities.”
As this shift accelerates, competitive advantage depends on clarity, speed and strategic accuracy. The agent economy compresses the value cycle and changes what took years to months or weeks. In other words, hesitantness is not just expensive. According to Castleman, it could be fatal in a fast mobile market.
“It’s very important to be clear about what you’re trying to achieve and what you’re doing towards it,” he added. “Pauses will be a big problem.”
