The Indian government has introduced proposed changes to information technology regulations aimed at ensuring transparency in content creation on digital platforms. As highlighted by Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan, the focus is on labeling AI-generated content rather than censorship. The new rules will require content creators to clearly label synthetic media, allowing viewers to make informed decisions about its authenticity.

The amendments address the growing challenge of deepfakes and misinformation, and bring significant changes to the way digital content is managed. Large platforms, including social media giants such as Facebook and YouTube, are expected to play a key role in verifying and flagging synthetic information to minimize the damage caused by misleading content.

By focusing on labeling rather than restricting AI content, India highlights its commitment to fostering innovation while ensuring accountability. The draft amendments, which are open for public comment until November 6, 2025, also require embedding of metadata and visibility of labels, strengthening the legal framework against misleading synthetic media.
