Mahesh Saptharishi, chief technology officer at Motorola Solutions, said AI-powered security cameras could save up to 10,000 lives a year. Saptarishi, who spoke at Fortune’s Brainstorm AI conference, said these “smart” cameras could enhance public safety by reducing response times for first responders.

Saftarishi highlighted how language barriers in 911 calls can slow emergency response. AI capabilities such as real-time translation and image recognition have the potential to overcome these challenges. He estimated that reducing the average response time of 911 cases by just 60 seconds could make a big difference.

“All the functionality of the camera is built in,” he said, emphasizing that these AI-enabled cameras are only slightly more expensive than basic cameras. Cameras can quickly analyze data, allowing law enforcement and emergency responders to take immediate action.

The CTO gave the example of a missing child report. Using AI, a child’s description could be instantly broadcast to all nearby cameras and shared with law enforcement. The system ensures privacy by selectively processing data, Saptarishi pointed out.

Motorola’s video technology is widely used in police departments, schools, and other public safety agencies. The company faced a lawsuit earlier this year. Massachusetts State Police and Motorola have been accused of illegally recording residents using the company’s “eavesdropping devices,” raising concerns about violations of civil rights and privacy.

Apple is also entering the security camera market with innovative technology. The company recently patented a “body print” system that combines facial recognition with physical features.

The patent, discovered by Gadgets 360, explains how Apple’s camera can recognize people even when their faces can’t be clearly seen. Instead, it creates a profile by analyzing physical characteristics such as torso shape and clothing. It builds on and expands on Apple’s facial recognition technology used in the iPhone.

Cameras can identify individuals based on a combination of facial and physical attributes, even when their faces are hidden. Apple’s technology is designed to enhance the security and accuracy of identifying individuals.

AI-powered security cameras are gaining attention for their potential to save lives and improve public safety. However, privacy concerns and legal challenges remain major hurdles to implementing these advanced systems.
