Doccla is a company that provides remote patient monitoring and virtual wards to NHS Trusts. The Doccla model is “designed to support early hospital discharge and prevent unavoidable hospital admissions, especially for patients with long-term conditions.”
There is already evidence of Doccla’s effectiveness, with the NHS seeing a 61% reduction in bed days, an 89% reduction in GP appointments and a 39% reduction in non-elective admissions. As well as improving efficiency, the AI-driven software has also saved the NHS around £450 per day compared to the cost of hospital beds, the company says. Figures show that for every £1 spent on such technology, the NHS saves an estimated £3 compared to non-technology models.
“At Doccla, we use machine learning to identify patients at risk of deterioration before they reach a crisis point. Continuous data from clinical-grade wearables, such as oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and electrocardiograms, is analyzed with medical records to detect early warning signs,” said McDonnell.
This insight allows clinical teams to intervene faster and manage larger caseloads compared to traditional systems. AI may also have a positive impact on the mental state of clinicians, contributing to a reduction in administrative burden. For example, large language models (LLMs) are being used to streamline clinical notes and present complex information to patients in a more accessible way. Clinicians reading this will breathe a sigh of relief because AI will not replace clinicians, it will only make them more effective.
Clinical confidence in this technology remains low and will only increase with transparency and further evidence of success. Predictive models must also provide accurate and unbiased results for diverse patient groups before being deployed at scale in real-world clinical settings.
AI is at the forefront of this transformation, as the UK’s NHS moves towards moving more care from hospitals to communities under the Future: UK 10 Year Health Plan. The future of AI healthcare will allow patients to remain more independent and receive the care they need in a familiar environment.
