Apple quietly purchased two artificial intelligence companies, Truemeeting and WhyLabs, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the AI technology of its products. According to regulatory applications, the transaction was officially recorded in January 2025, but industry experts believe it was closed in late 2024.
These acquisitions aim to improve Apple’s Vision Pro headsets and enhance AI security across the platform. Truemeeting specializes in creating surreal digital avatars using smartphone scans. Its technology has contributed to major upgrades to the Apple Vision Pro avatar, making it look more natural and detailed with the latest VisionOS updates.
Founded by a former Amazon engineer, Whylabs focuses on AI monitoring and security. It provides tools to detect and block risks in AI systems, such as data leaks and false outputs, and is tailored to Apple’s powerful privacy and security standards.
Neither Apple nor Startups publicly announced the acquisition, but confirmation was made through submissions from the European Commission and updates from those involved. WhyLabs was valued at around $37 million after a 2021 funding round backed by investors, including Jeff Bezos’ venture fund.
These transactions are part of Apple’s larger AI strategy. In 2023, Apple acquired 32 AI startups, surpassing other tech giants such as Google and Microsoft. The company focuses on purchasing early stage companies with advanced AI technology that supports device processing and user privacy priorities.
Truemeeting’s avatar technology addresses early criticism of Vision Pro’s digital persona. Meanwhile, WhyLabs security tools are essential as Apple deploys AI features on iPhones, iPads and Macs.
Apple’s expansion in Seattle, where Whylabs is based, supports the company’s investment in AI talent and innovation in the region.
