Cloudflare announced that it has acquired Human Native, an AI data marketplace aimed at connecting content creators and publishers with AI developers seeking high-quality materials for training and inference, as the company deepens its tools to help monetize web content in the age of AI.

The deal brings Human Native’s team and technology into Cloudflare’s broader efforts to build an AI-driven Internet economy, one in which original content can be structured into “AI-enabled” data, presented to potential buyers, and priced through transparent channels. Cloudflare did not disclose financial terms.

Cloudflare positioned the acquisition as a response to the growing tensions faced by creators and publishers. AI systems are increasingly dependent on access to trusted, high-quality content, while content owners are considering whether to block automated scraping altogether, optimize content for AI discovery, or offer licensed access at a price that reflects the value of the work. Cloudflare said it aims to support all three paths by giving publishers and creators more control over how bots and AI systems interact with their sites, as well as building mechanisms to enable paid access.

Founded in 2024, Human Native aims to create a more equitable relationship between rights holders and AI companies by enabling the discovery and licensing of content for AI use. Cloudflare said the Human Native team includes veterans from organizations like DeepMind, Google, Figma, and Bloomberg, and these capabilities will help accelerate Cloudflare’s product roadmap for creator monetization and access to AI content.

Cloudflare also highlighted its existing efforts to manage bot access and content usage, including the Pay Per Crawl solution mentioned in the release. The company said the acquisition expands the tools AI developers need to find, access, and prepare trusted datasets to prepare and package their content for purchase, while enabling creators to more effectively price and monetize their work.

The announcement highlights the industry’s broader shift to formal licensing and marketplace-style access to data for AI development, as content owners, AI labs, and platform providers explore models that balance open web access with compensation, attribution, and control for creators. Cloudflare said it plans to integrate Human Native’s products and technology into existing products over time, but timing and availability are subject to development and integration progress.

Cloudflare, which operates a large global network of security and performance services, says it serves millions of organizations and blocks billions of online threats every day. The company positioned this acquisition as part of its efforts to preserve the long-term health of the open Internet by combining content management with viable economic models for distribution and monetization in the age of AI.

Main quotation:

“Content creators deserve full control over their work, whether they want to write for humans or optimize for AI. Last year, we gave publishers and creators the tools to control which bots can access their content, but the real goal has always been to create new products that actually work in the next phase of the internet. The Human Native team will help us accelerate the next phase of building tools that enable content to be discovered, priced, and purchased through transparent channels.”This acquisition is about building the tools needed to protect content.” ”

Matthew Prince, Cloudflare Co-Founder and CEO

“We founded Human Native with the goal of bringing Generative AI out of the Napster era. We believe that creators should have control, compensation, and credit when their work is used to power AI products, to enable responsible AI development while ensuring fair compensation for rights holders.”

Dr. James Smith, Human Native Co-Founder and CEO

“High-quality data is the key to achieving true differentiation in AI. James and Jack Galilee have built an infrastructure that enables AI teams to discover and access valuable data on the internet, while also allowing data owners to seamlessly surface, price, and monetize their data. We are very excited to see them continue this mission at Cloudflare.”

Ziv Reichert, LocalGlobe Partner

“At Mercuri, we invest at the intersection of media and AI, and Human Native has embodied this theme from the beginning. When we first invested two years ago, we were committed to rewarding creators fairly for their data and ensuring that AI can advance with high-quality, ethically sourced data. Our belief in these principles has only grown stronger in today’s market, and we are now excited to see how the Human Native team continues this mission.” ”
