SK Hynix exists in the CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) business, TheElec learned.

Instead, the company will focus entirely on AI memory products. People working in CIS business units are transferred to teams working in high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

At a recent internal communication event with employees, SK Hynix said that the AI era is upon us and that the company has achieved “big results” in the AI memory sector.

SK Hynix told employees.

SK Hynix added that technology and expertise are important in strengthening the CIS business unit’s position as a global AI company.

SK Hynix launched its CIS business in 2007 and has since tried to increase its market share in the mobile market. However, the units continued to mark low profitability, and their existence was constantly questioned.

In the year-end re-shuffle Lats, the business unit moved to be under the supervision of future technology labs. These teams are more research-oriented than teams under the supervision of the CEO.

SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung was also known to have strong support for continuing the CIS business unit before the exit.

The company said it also plans to become a full stack AI memory provider during its vent.
