We will accelerate the real-world benefits and applications of AI through cutting-edge research, growing world-class talent, and deepening collaboration with governments.
The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the world’s population and is expected to continue to grow significantly. The Singapore government’s ambitious and forward-thinking approach, exemplified by its National AI Strategy 2.0 and Smart Nation 2.0, and its openness to global talent, make this the perfect location to expand our presence as we open the new Google DeepMind lab in Singapore.
This investment builds on Google’s long-standing commitment to the Asia-Pacific ecosystem and follows Google DeepMind’s APAC team more than doubling in size over the past year.
Gemini advances and impact on frontier AI
Our growing team in Singapore is comprised of leading research scientists, software engineers, and AI impact experts focused on key areas of research and development. This builds on Google’s commitment to pioneering fundamental research on linguistic and cultural inclusivity in Asia Pacific, evolving Gemini’s core capabilities, and applying modern models across Google services and to cloud customers.
Our new research lab will focus on collaboration, working directly with governments, businesses, civil society, and world-class academic institutions across the region. We are focused on understanding how to best build our technology to meet the diverse needs of the Asia Pacific region.
Build on a foundation of positive impact
We’re already seeing our teams and partners create extraordinary positive impact by applying Google technology in Singapore and the wider region. Beyond our core products like Gemini, there are creative and exciting examples of how our AI technology is used collaboratively and responsibly.
Science: A multidisciplinary research team from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research Singapore (A*STAR) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) used AlphaFold to pioneer a breakthrough in understanding Parkinson’s disease, establishing a link between immunology and the neurodegenerative disease that could lead to early diagnosis and targeted therapy. Public Service Sector: We work closely with GovTech, the Cyber Security Authority of Singapore (CSA) and the Information and Communications Media Development Authority. (IMDA). Together, we launched an AI agent sandbox to safely test autonomous solutions that enhance public sector efficiency and service delivery. About multilingualism: In collaboration with AI Singapore, we launched Project Aquarium, an open data platform for Southeast Asian languages. We have also expanded our partnership to support the further development of SEA-LION, a family of LLMs trained and tailored to represent the cultural contexts and linguistic nuances of Southeast Asia. This enabled the launch of SEA-LION v4, the first multimodal model built on the multimodal capabilities of Gemma 3. In the education sector, we are offering students in Singapore one year of free access to the Google AI Pro plan to unlock upgraded AI features for creativity and learning. We also introduced Gemini Academy to IMDA’s Singapore Digital Office to expand AI literacy and make AI accessible to everyone. Working with startups: Google for Startups: We support AI-first startups in Singapore through our AI First accelerator. We use generative AI to tackle critical economic, social, and environmental problems.
These examples reflect what is possible when cutting-edge AI research is aligned with Singapore’s forward-looking innovation and strong public purpose.
our common future vision
As we expand our presence in Singapore, we are working to ensure the benefits of AI are realized across the region. Through our new AI research lab, we will continue to collaborate with the region’s vibrant ecosystem of partners to unlock the transformative benefits of AI for diverse communities. Together, we are responsibly shaping how AI can meet the needs and reflect the culture of more than half of the world’s population.
