Google veteran Wu Yonghui has been appointed by bytedance, the parent company of Tiktok, to lead AI research. WU spent nearly 17 years at Google and played a role in Google Brain, working on natural language processing tasks such as voice translation and automatic speech recognition.
Baitedan launched its seed department in early 2023 for large-scale language models and advanced research into genai. It will report directly to ordinance CEO Liang Rubo, according to a new report by WU’s South China Morning Post, based in San Jose, California.
In particular, WU was promoted to Google Fellow’s Vice President of Research in 2023, a senior-level role at Google Deepmind.
In January, Bytedance released a flagship AI model update, Doubao-1.5-Pro, and another AI model in February called the Omnihuman-1.
The Beijing-based tech giant has put power on AI as races intensifies with the release of Deepseek-R1, a new open source inference model from Chinese AI startup Deepseek, comparable to Openai’s O1 model across most benchmarks. I’m pushing it against me.
