Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot for Elon Musk, faces new criticism after reports revealed that users were using women to undress in photos. AI is part of X, formerly known as Twitter, and raises new concerns about online safety and moderation.
The backlash began when a woman emphasized the issue with X, when users responded to a photo of the woman and showed how to ask Grok to “undress.” The incident attracted more widespread attention after the 404 media reported. The technology that allows people to generate non-consensual sexual images is nothing new, but it is a widely available AI service that allows users to do so.
Experts raise concerns about AI protection measures
A consultant at Tech and Society highlighted the issue by sharing screenshots of the request and asking if there was “system-level safety and content moderation guardrail.”
In response, the AI issued an apology, adding that “this underscores the gap in our safeguards, which violates ethical standards regarding consent and privacy as we were unable to block harmful prompts.” This confirmed the policy to improve future consent protocols.
This incident is as lawmakers are working on the law to enhance online safety protections. Online bullying parents and victims are seeking stricter laws, citing the emotional damage caused by intimate images shared without consent.
Defeat it and gain momentum
In April, the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan Take It Down Act. Ted Cruz Sen. R-Texas, and D-Minn. The bill, introduced by Amy Klobuchar of the United States, aims to protect victims who have targeted intimate images of Deepfakes and non-consensual.
The law requires the platform to remove reported content within 48 hours, making such images a criminal offence. President Donald Trump has indicated that the bill will be signed into law.
Legislators push fake behaviour
In addition to the Take It Down Act, lawmakers reintroduced the No Fakes Act earlier this year. The bill “sought to protect individual voices and visual portraits from unfair use through generative artificial intelligence.”
The law cites a lawsuit from April last year in which a high school principal was falsely accused of racism based on records generated by AI. Organizations such as the American Recording Industry Association and YouTube have expressed support for the bill.
X and Musk have not commented yet
Elon Musk has praised Grok in the past, calling it a slang term that means “base” – a real meaning, compared to rival AI chatbots like ChatGpt. However, X does not directly address the latest controversy over Glock’s misuse.
