If you’ve been active on social media, especially X within the last 24 hours, it might give the impression that it’s the world of Studio Ghibli and we live in it. It all happened thanks to Openai’s latest image generation update on ChatGpt.
And while people rethink themselves in the world of Studio Ghibli, an old video from co-founder Miyazaki Hayao says that the animation generated by Ai is “an insult to life itself.”

In the old clips, famous filmmakers known for masterpieces such as Spirited Away and neighbor Totoro expressed their opinions about AI, saying they don’t understand the true feelings of humans.
In this video, a group of animators and designers introducing Studio Ghibli producers Suzuki and Miyazaki showcase the “creation” of AI machines that can animate images.
The animated images look like terrifying zombies, and they explained that AI can come up with strange and unnatural movements beyond what humans can imagine.
The presenter said, “It looks like it’s dancing. It’s moving using your head. It doesn’t feel pain, and there’s no concept of protecting your head. It uses your head like a head. This movement can be applied to zombie video games.
Unimpressed by the description and animation images, Miyazaki said he had a friend with disabilities who struggled with simple movements such as giving him a high five because of his stiff muscles. He further said that this animated image of the unnatural movement reminded him of the struggle of his friends, but that it was not interesting.
Miyazaki told Farout Magazine: “You can’t see something like this and find something interesting. Anyone who creates something like this doesn’t know what the pain is. I’m totally tired of it.
He further said, “I strongly feel this is a shame for life itself.”
Explaining his presentation, the designer said, “This is our experiment and we are not going to do anything by showing it to the world.”
Suzuki also asked the team about their purpose. One of them replied that they wanted to build a machine that could paint like a human.
ChatGpt’s latest model, GPT4O, comes with an integrated image generator, which took social media by storm. Among users, even AI CEO Sam Altman changed his profile photo to an AI-generated Ghibli-style version that was a huge hit.
