(Vienna, August 8, 2025) The Vienna Medical University is represented on the international stage by experts. Matthias Samwald of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence played an important role in drafting the new EU code of practice for General Purpose AI (GPAI). This set of rules aims to ensure that new AI models are developed under strict safety and quality standards. The work is based on the major AI developers such as Openai, Google, Anthropic, and Xai.
The code of practice presented in Brussels includes binding guidelines for working with the most powerful AI systems, from minimizing potential risk to promoting transparency and accountability. Samwald took the lead in the “safety and security.” It defines how risks such as misuse, lack of controllability, or systemic vulnerability can be identified and mitigated early on.
“These rules have a direct impact in Europe, but are also expected to form the basis for international agreements and best practices,” emphasizes Samwald. “This creates a necessary foundation for trust. Now, using this foundation to significantly accelerate the development of safe frontier AI and AI-driven innovations in Europe. That’s my next challenge.”
