The latest Tighton Partners Report works with D2L to explore the role of AI in higher education
Toronto, June 11, 2025 / Global Learning Technology Company PRNewswire/ -D2L and Tyton Partners are collaborating to release annual class surveys that bring together insights from over 3,000 respondents on the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology in higher education and digital technology.
We see that the more instructors use AI, the more time you can see the benefits of the class 2025 report. Over a third (36%) of surveyed individuals using the Generated AI Daily Report reported a significant decrease in workload. At the same time, instructors and administrators reported that attempting to monitor the use of AI students would create more work for them. Furthermore, the research reveals that most institutions of higher education do not have generative AI policies, allowing both instructors and students to navigate the challenges of AI adoption without standardized guidance or tools.
“This study provides a snapshot of the ongoing impact of AI in higher education, as well as revealing opportunities to make the learning experience more engaging. ChristifordChief Learning Officer of D2L. “With the right AI tools in place, faculty can save more valuable time on specific tasks and create more bandwidth to engage with one-on-one students.”
The report reveals the respondents.
Thirty-six percent of instructors who use generator AI daily experience a decline in workloads by using technology to streamline course development, but 26% noticed an increase of 26% and 39% who have not experienced any change. Instructors are open to using generative AI to help students solve in-class challenges, particularly academic support (66%) and improve their study habits (63%).
84% of students say they look to people – For example, an instructor or their friends – when you’re struggling with the course. More instructors (29%) than students (17%) believe they turn to generative AI tools when students are struggling.
Only 28% of institutions with aggressive generation AI policies are in the development stage where 58% deploy AI policies. Instructors are open to identifying academic integrity (46%) and student attendance (44%) as key leadership challenges for the institution and using AI to address these concerns. 75% of managers and 58% of faculty agree that it is their responsibility, or their institution’s responsibility, to teach them how to effectively apply AI to research.
Embedded AI tools like D2L Lumi can align with institutional policies, act as a guardrail for students, and help increase learner engagement to reduce educator workload. D2L Lumi is an AI native offering within D2L Brightspace designed to help empower educators and learners with more personalized recommendations after quiz completion, instant feedback and grades, and practice questions tailored to course content.
To understand the challenges and opportunities that technology presents in higher education, Tyton Partners surveyed approximately 1,500 instructors from 300 administrators, over 700 institutions and 250 institutions. Over 1,500 students in US.
“Our research using D2L reveals pivotal moments for higher education institutions as we navigate the integration of AI into teaching and learning.” Katherine Shawmanaging director of Tyton Partners. “There is strong consistency in the importance of preparing students to use AI, but institutions need to effectively implement clearer strategies and tools.”
